Strathcona Sunrise Rotary Mentor Program

Goal: To foster the development, growth and retention of new members to the club by integrating them more fully and deliberately via participation in key activities and experiences that make one a Rotarian.

Responsibility: Although it is the responsibility of ALL members of the club to contribute to the development of each new member, primary responsibility lies with the new member’s sponsor.

Committee: A committee of 3-4 members will oversee the mentor program. The committee will have the following responsibilities:

  • Make sponsor aware of obligation to new member regarding his/her role in assisting and encouraging the new member to complete the program.
  • Monitor progress of the new member towards completion of the mentor program.
  • Maintain contact with the board regarding progress of new members.
  • Recruit volunteers who will help with various aspects of the mentor program.
Mentor Program Milestone Activities
  • New member completes a make up at another club.
  • New member attends a board meeting.
  • New member participates in a club social activity i.e. Christmas party, Club dance and auction, car rally, etc.
  • New member takes part in fundraiser i.e. bingo
  • New member is introduced to club at a regular meeting either by the new member themselves or proposer (who is this person, what do they do, why did they join club)
  • New member attends an Orientation to Rotary session.
  • New member attends an Interact or Rotaract meeting.

Tracking and Symbols: new members start out with a dot on their badges. When the milestones have been achieved, the dot is removed from the badge, The expected time period for completion is a maximum of 6 months with encouragement to complete sooner. A package including a letter of welcoming and explanation of the mentor program and it’s purpose signed by the president of the club and the name badge with the coloured dot is provided to each new member by their sponsor.

Completion: once all milestones have been achieved and the sticker is removed from the name badge, a presentation may be made at a regular club meeting that would include the awarding of a token – perhaps a rotary golf shirt or hat.

Key Elements:
  • Proposers must be made aware of and be prepared to accept their mentorship responsibilities as a condition of the approval of the proposed new member. This is ensured by the Membership Development Committee who considers each application for membership. They act as the liason between the Mentor Program Committee and the proposer.
  • The Mentor Program Committee is prepared to assist and support the proposer.
  • The Mentor Program Committee is prepared to pick up where the proposer might fall short.
