Norberry and Finch Featured on 13 October

Judy Norbury and Joanna Finch, well known Comox Valley singer/songwirters, recently attended a world conference of the handicapped in Winnipeg. Our club helped the pair with their travel expenses. Judy provided a report on the conference which involved 800 people from 100 countries and where she and Joanna were featured performers. Following Judy's report and thank you to our club, she and Joanna set our toes tapping with four of their great compositions. A great start to our day!

Club Extends a Hand at the Miners' Restaurant and Bakery

Our meeting on 6 October was held at the Miners' Restaurant and Bakery in Cumberland. Ten community leaders joined us for this event and our guest speaker was Cumberland resident, teacher and councillor, Gwyn Sproule, who spoke about Cumberland's history and its place in the Comox Valley up to the present day. The purpose of having our meeting in Cumberland was part of our club's outreach program, extending Rotary's hand to others. Cumberland has no active service club in its community so President Chip and our Board of Directors wanted to determine what interest there might be in establishing a Rotary club in Cumberland. A follow-up meeting is planned in the next few weeks. A great breakfast was provided by Pauline and her staff and relished by all who attended.

Phatom Planters for Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the time that the "Phantom Planters" of our club plant daffodil bulbs along roadways in the Comox Valley. On Saturday, Sunrise Rotarian Marcia Allardice led a small crew that included husband Gerry, Rotarians Robin Harrison and Debbie Allen and Interactor Heidi Pridy and her mother Carol. They planted some 800 bbulbs along the Comox Valley Parkway. Those bulbs along with the thousands planted over the years will beautify our Valley in time for Cancer Month in April. Marcia has another 1,000 to plant so let her know if you can help.

Millard Nature Park - Finished Deck

Several Strathcona Sunrisers made the dell ring with the noise of hammers and saws as they built an observation deck overlooking the stream valley in the Millard Nature Park on Saturday. The finished deck is the second phase of the Rotary Club's Centennial Project. The next phase will see the construction of four information displays which will present information on the natural and cultural significance of the Nature Park.
One may visit the observation deck by following the new trail from Fraser Road, just south of the Old Island Highway.

Project at Glacier View Lodge Almost Complete

On Wednesday afternoon and evening, 29 September, a crew of energetic Sunrisers assembled to continue the work on the project started earlier in the year at Glacier View Lodge. Forms were removed from the new sidewalk, a bed of plants was created, the ground prepared for a cedar hedge adjacent to a new chain-link fence (to be installed later this week) and six yards of gravel were wheelbarrowed to fill in voids between the sidewalk and the main building to bring everything up to the same level. Robin Harrison, who has been the project coordinator since the beginning, ably assisted by Mike Collins who looked after coordinating the excavation, sidewalk and fence, and Al Bergquist, Marcia Allardice, Bill Wright, David Smith and John Challender worked up a sweat (except Marcia, of course, who simply glowed) doing a lot of heavy work. The staff at the Lodge treated us to squares and lemonade and made us all feel appreciated. Good fun and fellowship for all.

Bob Clarke Tribute

All who knew Dr Bob Clarke were deeply saddened by his death on 28 September 2003 following his battle with cancer. Bob is remembered fondly by the many people in our community whom he served as a physician, Rotarian, humanitarian and visionary. He is greatly missed.
