Work Begun to Extend Rotary in the Comox Valley

Recently, the Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise, Courtenay, held its regular weekly meeting at the Miners' Cafe in the historic Village of Cumberland. Invited guests at that meeting included Cumberland Mayor Fred Bates, members of the Village Council and other key community and business leaders. Cumberland has been without any service club since the LIONS club shut down and has never had a Rotary Club so Sunrise President Chip Ross used the meeting as a way of introducing key Cumberland residents to Rotary. As a followup to that event, an information evening for a number of interested Cumberland residents was held in the Cumberland Fire Hall on 25 November with DG Dick Drew and Aline in attendance, providing support. The Cumberland residents were hosted by President Chip and a half dozen other Sunrisers and were shown the excellent video "Rotary on Vancouver Island". Following the video, several Rotarians spoke about various aspects of Rotary and DG Dick encouraged everyone to continue the activity started at the meeting. Work will continue to establish a Rotary club in Cumberland before the end of this Rotary year.

Cheque Given to Interact Club of Highland Secondary School

The Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise presented the Interact Club of Highland Secondary School, Comox, with a cheque for $500 in recognition of the students' support of the Rotary Club's sponsorship of Circus Gatti. Through its sponsorship of the circus, the Rotary Club raises a modest amount each year which is used to fund community service projects. On hand to make the presentation to Vice-President Joanna Ludlow and Secretary-Treasurer Marsalie MacKenzie, at the Interact Club's weekly meeting on Thursday, was Sunrise Rotarian John Challender. The students have a list of projects they are considering to help fund with the money.
