Celebration in Cumberland

The spirit of celebration of service was present in force at the Cumberland Cultural Centre on Tuesday evening. Rotarians, spouses and friends from communities all over the Island gathered to celebrate the homecoming of the charter of one of the newest Rotary clubs in the world. Messages of congratulations from MP John Duncan, MLA Stan Hagen, the Cumberland Village Council, Rotary Clubs in many countries and several Island Rotary clubs added to the festive mood of the evening. As is the custom in Rotary, when a new club is chartered, existing clubs from all parts of Rotary District 5020, which encompasses all of Vancouver Island and part of Washington State south to the Oregon border, presented gifts of equipment and cash to help the new club of 21 charter members get started. The Rotary Club of Cumberland Centennial, named so because 2005 is the centennial of Rotary, has already begun to take its place in the service of humanity and the promotion of understanding, good will and peace throughout the world.

Comox Valley Hospice Society Supported by Rotarians

The members of the Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise were treated to an excellent presentation at their meeting this week by Terri Odeneal, Executive Director of the Comox Valley Hospice Society. Odeneal, who has been the Executive Director of the organization for just over a year, explained how some 60 volunteers provided 9,000 hours of support to people in the final days their lives and to the members of their families. The society relies totally on the work of volunteers and the incredible generosity of the citizens of the community. Odeneal mentioned that 17% of Canadians are currently over 75 and it is estimated that in 25 years, the percentage of the population over that age will grow to 52%. The work of the Hospice Society will continue to expand in the future and more support will be needed. Following the meeting, Sunrise president Chip Ross presented a cheque to Ms Odeneal for $2,000.

New Rotary Club in Cumberland

The new Rotary Club of Cumberland Centennial made its presence known to the community in the 117th Annual Empire Day Parade in Cumberland on Monday. The main feature of their presence was a brand new ready-mix truck whose drum was painted with the name of the new club and a celebratory statement about Rotary's 100 years of service. The truck, which was recently acquired by Cumberland Ready-Mix and painted with the Rotary logo and messages, was made available through the generosity of Keith Tatton of Cumberland Ready-Mix who is a member of the new club. Cumberland Rotary president Mac Fraser will receive the club's charter from Rotary International's President-Elect, Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar at Rotary District 5020's Conference in Duncan on Friday, 3 June. The club will hold a celebration of its new charter at the Cumberland Cultural Centre on Tuesday, 7 June.

Rotarians to Kick Off ALS Campaign

On Saturday, 28 May, Comox Valley Rotarians and friends who are dedicated to raising awareness about ALS, will be setting up information tables in the Comox Centre Mall and the Driftwood Mall. The two sites will feature displays and information about the disease as well as stories written by persons with ALS and their families to help increase understanding about this affliction that results in the loss of more Canadians every year than AIDS. Rotarian Jerry Feniak, who is heading up the organizing committee, has been working hard with his volunteer group to get the word out in the Comox Valley and has had great response from businesses where posters are being displayed to alert interested people to the Walk, Roll Run to Stamp Out ALS that will be held on Fathers' Day in Courtenay. On Sunday, 19 June, at 9:00 AM at the Upper Level of the Florence Filberg Centre, participants will be able to register (no fee) and walk, roll or run to raise money to help with patient support and research. Anyone interested in participating can download a pledge sheet from: HERE or can contact Jerry at: 339-2796, John at: 339-4068, or Pat at: 890-0267 or 334-5400. Pledge sheet will be available in the Malls on Saturday, 28 May between 11 AM and 3 PM.
